Cheever and John Weaver met in the early 1940s in Astoria, Queens, where they were stationed during the war. They went on to exchange almost three hundred letters through the following forty years. They discussed Cheever's life and work, battles with alcoholism, marital difficulties, and more. These were published by Weaver in 1993 as Glad Tidings.
