Paris 1853 - 1912

Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

Pierre Nicolas Tourgueneff, who was born and died in Paris, studied under the famous French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. Like his teacher, Tourgueneff specialised in the sculptural representation of animals. Inspired by his time in the French military, his oeuvre is characterised above all by equine and equestrian figures, and this bronze sculpture is without exception one of them. Although the powerful parts of the animal have been particularly crafted, the result is an extremely elegant overall appearance, which is underlined by the matte patina of the sculpture.
Tourgueneff was deeply rooted in the Parisian cultural scene and regularly took part in the Paris Salons, which served as the flagship of the French art establishment in the 19th century. In 1889, he received the Grand Prix during the Exposition Universelle and in 1903 he was awarded France's highest honour, the Legion d'honneur, for his life's work.
