Broadside playbill, February 1844
[CHRISTMAS CAROL]. — THEATRE ROYAL, ADELPHI. Christmas Carol! London: S.G. Fairbrother, 12 February 1844.
Broadside playbill for the first official staging of Dickens’s Christmas Carol, a performance which occurred within just weeks of the publication of the first edition on 19 December 1843. Edward Stirling dramatized this production. He was reliably quick on the draw with dramatic adaptations of Dickens’s work. His productions of Pickwick, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop and Martin Chuzzlewit were performed even before the novels completed their serial runs. Dickens was generally pleased with Stirling’s results (with some exceptions) and this broadside advertises the fact that this is the only authorized staging. Yale/Gimbel H876 (5 February performance).
Broadside (420 x 440mm). Text double-column, folded vertically between the columns. (Light wear along folds and edges and a few minor stains, overall in excellent condition.) Provenance: Kenyon Starling – [sold to:] William E. Self (his sale, Christie’s New York, 2 April 2008, lot 103).
