The Second World War. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1948-1954.

Presentation set, inscribed in all volumes to Anthony Eden, of the American edition of Churchill's monumental history of the Second World War. The publication history of Churchill's Second World War is tortuous, but essentially the American publisher, Houghton Mifflin, published the first volume before the British one because their patience in handling the stream of Churchill's (often cabled) corrections ran out, and they did not face the same paper rationing restrictions as Cassell in Britain. Although they 'scooped' the market, their published text is not the final, authoritative version, and it lacks all the folding maps. But it also explains why Eden received this edition from Churchill, as it would have been the first such available for distribution. Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 'for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values'.
