GAUCHER, Charles-Étienne (1741-1804). Album of engravings. France, c.1770-1800.

Album of engravings by one of the most celebrated French engravers of the 18th century, in red morocco gilt by Canape. Gathered here are many of Gaucher’s most famous portraits, frequently in multiple states, of more than 100 historical personages, mostly his 18th-century contemporaries, including his engraving of Marie Antoinette after Moreau le Jeune and of Madame du Barry after François-Hubert Drouais (the latter in its first state). The album also includes an original pencil drawing of the François Comte d’Hartig. See C. Michel, “Charles-Étienne Gaucher,” in Grove Art Online.

Three volumes, quarto (300 x 234mm). 197 engravings, each tipped to a card mount. 19th-century red morocco gilt by Georges Canape, silk endpapers (very lightly rubbed).
