Colonel Alphonse Désiré Charles Dhont (1813 - 1870) – a distinguished deluxe sword in its case, presented by the NCOs of the 2e Regiment de Chasseurs à Pied to their commander, circa 1865
The double-edged, wavy Damascus blade in excellent condition, with two broad fullers and a fluted medial ridge. Three quarters of the blade exceptionally finely etched on both sides with chiselled and gilt trophies, tendrils and arabesques, plus a blued banner. No manufacturer's mark on the gilt ricasso. The raised, partly openwork hilt in relief with matt, partially polished, intact fire gilding, chiselled with floral ornaments and laurel friezes. The grooved handle made of imitation ivory with silver wire winding. Length of the sword 101.5 cm. Nickel-plated scabbard, two movable suspension rings, the bands with laurel décor and the drag with acanthus ornaments, the gilding in beautiful condition. Total length 105.5 cm.
The custom-made case covered in black leather (scuffed and stained in places), three brass clasps (one broken) and a gold-embossed dedication "LES SOUS-OFFICIERS DU 2E RÉGIMENT DE CHASSEURS À PIED À LEUR COMMANDANT MONSIEUR LE COLONEL D'HONT". Red velvet lining. Length of the case 109 cm.
A magnificent presentation sword, presumably a farewell gift from the regimental NCOs to their departing commander.
