Lot 20 | [COTTAGE BINDING] NEWTON, James, Esq.
Estimate value
€ 800 – 1 200
Alexis's paradise: or, a trip to the garden of love at Vaux-hall. A comedy. As it is privately acted by the ladies of honour, &c. Londres : imprimé pour T. Dormer, s.d. [c. 1722].
En marge inférieure du titre, une note manuscrite du XIXe siècle indique : « Alexis is Frederick Prince of Wales, Gemella, one of the maids of Honour (the Hon. Miss Vane, enceinte by the Prince… ». Elle est incomplète car rognée. Au verso, à la suite de la liste des dramatis personae, la même main explique : « all the above names, are intended for real persons, connected with the court ».
Provenance : Earl of Rosebery (ex-libris ; Sotheby’s, 26 juin 1933, lot n°946) – Major John Roland Abbey (1894-1969 ; ex-libris ; Sotheby’s, 23 juin 1965, lot n°506) – Sawyer, Catalogue of books on a variety of subjects, sale no. 272, n°120, 1966 – Alexis de Redé (ex-libris).
A very attractive example of a cottage binding, from the collections of the Earl of Rosebery and Major Abbey.
