Estimate value
£ 4 000 – 6 000
Le Musée français, recueil complet des tableaux, statues et bas-reliefs, qui composent la collection nationale. Paris: Imprimerie de L.E. Hernan [vol. IV: Paris, Impr. de Mame frères], 1803-1809.
First edition of Croze-Magnan’s colossal tribute to art in a sumptuous Napoleonic binding, reflecting the age of cultural imperialism. The first eight parts (of 80 total) were entitled Le Musée Napoléon, and all four volumes are dedicated to the man who had recently added so many trophies of war to the Louvre's treasures. Each livraison included a few plates of each different types of artwork—and the Avertissement points out that subscribers may arrange and bind the plates and explanatory text according to personal preference, curating their own personal museum. The best documentation of the holdings of the Musée du Louvre during the age of Napoleon. Cohen-de Ricci 743; Vicaire V, 1229.
Four volumes, folio (583 x 435mm). Half-titles. Engraved title vignettes, 344 engraved plates by P. Laurent and numerous others, vignettes in text (occasional scattered spotting, a few leaves lightly browning in vol. IV). Contemporary green straight-grained morocco gilt, covers panelled with wide borders of a palmette roll sandwiched between thick and thin fillets with Napoleonic eagles at corners, enclosing a central panel formed of a foliate roll in blind with offset square corners, each corner tooled in gilt with a Napoleonic bee with opposite initial ‘N’ enclosing a gilt Napoleonic eagle, gilt spines with double raised bands tooled with inter-repeating initial ‘N’s and bees, the second and third compartments lettered in gilt, the others with gilt Napoleonic eagles within foliate frames, wide gilt inner dentelle borders in a geometric design, red endpapers, gilts edges (extremities lightly rubbed).
