Lot 14 | Curious Adventures in Canada
Estimate value
$ 2 000 – 3 000
First edition of a picaresque account of adventures in Canada. The author claims firsthand experiences of life among the Native people of North America, but this report is likely more romance than reality. Even in its own time, the book's veracity was doubted; Dictionary of Canadian Biography writes: "taken all round, the work is more indicative of the author’s imagination than of a scientific spirit." Howes L167; Sabin 39582.
Two volumes, octavo (150 x 88mm). Folding map of North America and 5 folding engravings (missing engraving supplied in facsimile; lower corner margin of map lacking, including bottom of map, occasional repairs, and spots). Contemporary half calf (vol. 1 hinge tender; light wear). Provenance: Jean Ryhiner (1728-1790, an important Swiss textile dyer and civic figure; bookplates and signatures) – Burkhardt Ryhiner (bookplate) – Burckhardt Gemuseus (label).
