"True and genuine depiction of the newly built witch house, established to punish and convert those malicious, apostatized people, accused of witchcraft..." (translated). Single-sheet print based on a copper plate presumably by Peter Isselburg (previously attributed to Matthäus Merian), no date, place or printer; Bamberg, 1627. Paper with hardly any browning or foxing, good print, centerfold, minor damage to the edges, a tiny repair in the title hardly visible. Dimensions 27 x 25 cm. The print shows a view of this jail and its floorplan with prison cells and torture chamber. Built in 1627 at the height of the witch frenzy in Bamberg by bishop Johann Georg II. Fuchs von Dornheim it served its purpose for a few years only. Nonetheless almost 1000 prisoners were jailed and tortured here, most of which were later executed. It was torn down in 1635.
