A Cosway binding from the Estelle Doheny collection. With two portrait miniatures on ivory by C.B. Currie: a young Charles Dickens on the upper cover and his wife, Catherine Dickens on the lower cover. Limited edition, no. 178 of 250 copies for sale from a total edition of 275. Cosway limitation statement bound in: “This is No. 825 of the Cosway Bindings invented by J.H. Stonehouse, with Miniatures on Ivory by Miss C.B. Currie,” and signed by both Stonehouse and Currie.



Octavo (225 x 147 mm). Errata slip tipped-in. Navy blue crushed levant morocco by Riviere, the glazed portrait miniatures richly framed in gilt, covers with gilt-rule and border and corner ornaments, spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered in two, a repeated gilt panel in the rest, board edges and turn-ins gilt, dark blue moiré silk endleaves, top edge gilt, others uncut, partially unopened, stamp-signed by the binder on upper turn-in and by the artist on upper doublure, gilt-stamped “Cosway Binding / Invented by J.H. Stonehouse” on board fore-edges (touch of wear to upper joint). Morocco-edged slipcase. Provenance: Estelle Doheny, American philanthropist, 1875-1958 (morocco bookplate) – St. John’s Seminary, Camarillo, California (Doheny sale, Christie’s New York, 18 October 1988, lot 1559).
