DAVID NICHOLLS (b.1966)
One Day. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 2009.
First edition signed by the author on the title and annotated with 1285 words across 67 pages. One Day follows the relationship between Emma and Dexter, beginning at their first encounter on the night of their graduation and revisiting their story – and potential romance – on the same day of each of the next 20 years. It was adapted into a 2011 film of the same name, starring Anne Hathaway. The author’s commentary alludes to a wide range of literary influences and to passages he describes as ’stolen’ (‘One never knows how or when the books you read will crop up in the writing’), with particular emphasis on his favourite novel, Dickens’ Great Expectations. Other annotations contain autobiographical details and personal anecdotes from the author’s time as a student, with the disillusionment of young adulthood providing ‘material’ for his characters. Nicholls’ commentary is delightfully frank, offering a critique of his own writing and occasionally suggesting stylistic, and even structural, changes: ‘What a strange experience, looking back at something I wrote in (relative) youth… A book about growing older re-read by someone considerably older.’

Octavo. Original pictorial boards (a few faint marks and minor wear at extremities).
