Celestina, Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea. [Leyde] : Plantin, 1599.

Première édition donnée par Plantin de la Célestine. Si l’édition originale paraît à Burgos en 1499, ce n’est qu’avec l’édition de 1595 qu’elle prend le nom de Celestina, sous lequel elle est connue aujourd’hui. La présente édition de 1599 est la première donnée par Plantin. USTC ne recense aucun exemplaire conservé en institutions américaines.

In-8 (125 x 65 mm). Marque de l’imprimeur au titre. (marges courtes, bas de page effacé au verso du feuillet A2, restauration en marge extérieure du titre). Reliure signée d’Antolin Palomino : maroquin bleu, décor d’encadrements à la du Seuil, dos à nerfs et caissons ornés, gardes de papier marbré, tranches jaspées, étui (dos légèrement passé)

Provenance : monogramme « AIH » à l’encre sur le titre -- peut-être Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch (1747-1822, inscription manuscrite à l’encre au bas du titre :  “Clariss. S. Bertuch d.d.q. de Munn") -- Manuel de Foronda (ex libris, 1840-1920).



First Plantin edition of the Celestine, certainly the most renowned literary work in the Spanish language before Don Quixote was published, this copy elegantly bound by Palomino.
