Lot 6113 | Deckel eines Silberreliquiars mit Christus-Kameo, frühbyzantinisch, 2. Hälfte 5. - frühes 6. Jhdt.
Estimate value
€ 7 000
Selten schönes Fragment eines frühbyzantinischen Reliquiars.
Provenienz: Niederbayerische Privatsammlung, übernommen aus dem Besitz des Vaters.
The top of the lid adorned from beneath with chased decoration along the edge and re-chased on the top: the outside with a row of small, hemispherical bosses, followed on the inside by a gilt floral frieze. The latter bordered on the inside by a soldered band of narrow, crosshatched sheet metal, several small pieces of which have broken off. A 5.5 cm cameo of Christ in laminated glass mounted in the centre, set in a frame measuring circa 8 mm. Four circular settings with garnet cabochons in the corners, one of which has been lost. A delicate pointed oval setting punched around each garnet. Fine stippled decoration in the spaces between the garnets: heart-shaped leaves, from which two tendrils extend in spirals to the left and right. The edge circa 1.4 cm high, with a continuous line of notches in the centre. A (damaged) wire eyelet on the broad front side of the edge; a profiled hinge strap with two rivets is still preserved on the left-hand side at the rear, the right-hand strap is missing. Remnants of incrustation and oxides over the entire surface. Width 10.4 cm. Depth 8.7 cm.
An exceptionally exquisite fragment of an early Byzantine reliquary.
Provenance: From a private collection in Lower Bavaria, inherited from the consignor's father.
