Lot 296 | LARGE GREEK ICON SHOWING THE DEESIS AND ST. DEMETRIOS
Estimate value
€ 800 – 1 600
48.3 x 36.5 cm
The donor's name "Johannes Kypriannitis" is written at the bottom left in old-fashioned writing at the beginning of the scroll. In the middle section of the volume, the addressee of the painting's idea is addressed in two lines: The "image" shows the "miracle-working Saint Demetrios" (here: "Demetri"), "our Savior", and then continues reporting that the "commission was completed from Janes Mantiliotis (= “the seer”) Georgis” on July 14, 1843. The somewhat more extensive and younger (no longer fully legible) inscription in the lower middle of the painting on the left adds further holy intercessors (probably for the descendants of the founder): Charalampos, Georg , the holy martyrs of Epiros and the namesake of the original founder: John.
We would like to thank Mr. Bernhard Bornheim very much for the translation.
