THE 'HUNDRED NICHE' STUPA - Tibet, ca. 16th c. - The hundred niches symbolize the many aspects of his teachings. The large image of this stupa, as a building, is the famous Kumbum Chörten in Gyantse/Tibet. The small torana on the east side of the stupa is closed with glass and holds a heavily soiled miniature depicting a Bodisattva (?). Wood, pigments, ornaments sprayed on like stucco, small torana with glass and miniature behind it; base plate (?) still closed. - Important German private collection, collected in the 1970s and 80s, mostly acquired at Schoettle Ostasiatica, Stuttgart Literature: Robert Beer, The Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism, Diederichs Gelbe Reihe, Kreuzlingen/Munich, 2003:261f Wear, minor damages due to age
