Lot 168 | Janssens, Victor Honoré zugeschrieben. The Guardian Angel
Janssens, Victor Honoré attributed to (in 1658, Brussels - 1736 ibid.). Oil on canvas 120 x 89.5 cm. Doubled. Restoration. Damage to the frame min. damaged Victor Honoré Janssens is in the Flemish painting stylistically, the Transition from Baroque to classicism. A nine-year stay in Rome artists influenced him greatly, in 1689, he was admitted as a master in the Brussels Sint-Lucas Guild. 1720 was appointed Janssens to the court painter of Emperor Charles VI., after 1722, he spent some years in London. In this time, the present painting could have originated: In 1832 was sold at auction in London a painting "Tobit and the angel" of the Janssens. Perhaps this was identical to the one in 1913, in the case of Prestel, Frankfurt a. M., sold the factory (see auction Edward Foster's, London, 11. February, 1832, catalogue no. 72 "Tobit and the Angel"). The protective representations of angels are often confused with the subject of "Tobias with the Archangel Raphael on the wandering", which could have led to the designation in the case of Foster in 1832. Provenance: auction Prestel, Frankfurt a. M., 10. December, 1913, Catalogue No. 13.
