Schweißtuch der Hl. Veronika
In Grisaillemalerei ausgeführte Darstellung des Schweißtuches, das den Kopf des gemarterten Christus mit Dornenkrone en face zeigt. Das Schweißtuch ist eine der kostbarsten und am höchsten verehrten Reliquien der Christenheit und befindet sich heute in einem Tresor im Veronikapfeiler, einem der Vierungspfeiler des Petersdoms in Rom. Die tief religiösen Nazarener, welche die Kunst im Geiste des Christentums erneuern wollten und seit 1810/11 eine Künstlerkolonie in Rom gründeten, musste es faszinieren. Zu ihnen zählte auch Franz Ittenbach (1813 - 1879) aus der Düsseldorfer Gruppe der Nazarener, der 1839-1842 Italien bereiste und das Schweißtuch malte. Schwarze u. weiße Kreide/hellbraunes Papier. Ger. Läsuren an den Rändern. 45,5 cm x 57,5 cm. Rahmen.
