Ovale russische Ikone, 19. Jahrhundert

Ein seltenes Motiv russischer Ikonen ist die Darstellung zum Festtag des 1. August, der Austragung des Hl. Kreuzes Jesu. In Konstantinopel wurde am Vorabend (31. Juli) eine hochverehrte Kreuzesreliquie aus der kaiserlichen Schatzkammer in festlicher Prozession in die Hagia Sophia überführt. Bis zum 15. August, dem Fest der Entschlafung der Gottesmutter, wurde die Reliquie täglich feierlich durch die Stadt getragen, wobei am ersten Tag eine gefaßte Quelle am Stadtrand gesegnet wurde. Da im August Wasserknappheit herrschte und oftmals Seuchen ausbrachen, hatte dieser Wassersegen auch eine reale und aktuelle Bedeutung. In der Russischen Kirche ist dieses Fest auch verbunden mit der Erinnerung an die Taufe der Rus im Jahre 988.

A rare motif of Russian icons is the depiction of August 1, the Procession of the Venerable Wood of the Lord. In Constantinople a relic of the Venerable Wood was taken out of the Imperial treasury on the eve (July 31) and laid upon the altar of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia. Till August 15, the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the Cross was carried throughout the city in procession. At the first day a cased spring at the periphery was blessed. Because in August there was a water shortage and often epidemics appeared, the benediction of the water had a real and current background. In the Russian Church this Feast is also combined with the remembrance of the Baptism of Rus in 988.
