'Füglistaller I', mixed media with oil and pencil, collaged on cardboard, mounted under hard foam board, 23 cm x 32 cm inside mount, 36.5 cm x 55.5 cm object dimensions, signed, dated Nov. 84, Basel place-noted, titled, hard foam board partially torn and bumped at the edges, minimally stained, mounted, Provenance: Galerie Heinz Holtmann, Cologne, proof of purchase enclosed
The present work by Dieter Roth is an outstanding example of his later creative period. The title 'Füglistaller I' refers to the traditional company of the same name in Basel, which had been known for its high-quality household goods since the end of the 19th century and had to close its doors in March 2013. The lower part of the picture shows a collection of tableware applied by the frottage technique. The outlines of these tablewares are only dimly discernible. In the upper part of the painting, the tableware is clearly continued on a collaged wooden panel. Works with a comparable degree of detail and care are rare in Dieter Roth's oeuvre and therefore particularly exciting.
