Highly concentrated and reverent, the group of children marvel at their catch. In a glass jar there is a tree frog, also called weather frog. Judging by the looks and facial expressions of the children, one might imagine that there is a holy relic in the boy's hands. Hypnotically, the little boy on the far right looks at the jar; admonishingly, a girl raises her finger to her lips to ensure silence. Spellbound, they wait for a movement from the weather frogs, one of whom seems to be at the point of climbing up. The tension, hinting at euphoria, hardly seems bearable.
The Austrian Edmund Adler, who studied among others for a year in Rome thanks to a scholarship, reminds us, the viewers of the painting, of the carefree childhood days and the longing for a long summer full of joy and adventures. It demonstrates the charm of the simplicity of a peasant life.
