Italien stellt ein Leitmotiv im Oeuvre Bargheers dar, der als bedeutender Vertreter der Hamburger Sezession gilt und 1948 an der Biennale in Venedig und 1955 und 1959 an der 1. und 2. documenta teilnahm. Seine erste Italienreise 1925 prägte eine lebenslange Zuneigung zu dem Land, in das er während der NS-Zeit ins Exil ging. Sein Oeuvre ist geprägt von einer hellen, oft mosaikartigen Bildsprache mit einer abstrahierenden Gestaltung von Linien und Flächen und seine Werke spiegeln die Auseinandersetzung mit Licht und Landschaft wieder.
