Lot 5 | Edward Cucuel (San Francisco 1875 - Pasadena 1954). The Rendezvous.
Oil/canvas. 80 x 64,5 cm. Lo. le. and verso sign. Cucuel, on the stretcher titled. It is possible that the sitter is Clara Lotte von Marcard, Cucuel's second wife, whom he met in Chiemgau in the early 1910s. - Provenance: Since 30 years in a private collection Schleswig-Holstein. - American painter and graphic artist of French descent who was strongly influenced by French Impressionism. Edward Cucuel was born in San Francisco, the son of a newspaper publisher. He attended the art academy in San Francisco at the age of 14 and was employed as an illustrator by the newspaper 'The Examiner' as a teenager. At the age of 17, he continued his studies at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi in Paris, before moving to the Académie des Beaux Arts under Jean Léon Gérôme. In 1896 he returned to America and settled in New York. After working briefly as a newspaper illustrator, he moved back to Paris to devote himself to fine art. He lived there for two years, after which he traveled to France and Italy to study the Old Masters. He then went to Berlin, where he worked mainly as an illustrator. In 1907, he moved to Munich, the city that was to become his second home for a long time. There, C. joined the artists' group 'Scholle', in which Leo Putz was the outstanding artistic personality.
