Lot 204 | EDWARDS, William Henry (1822-1909)
EDWARDS, William Henry (1822-1909)

The Butterflies of North America...first [-second] series. New York, Cambridge and Boston: Hurd and Houghton, The Riverside Press [and] Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1874 [and] 1884.

A mixed set with beautifully-coloured plates, of 'one of the finest contributions to the biology of insects that have come from the United States. Edwards paid great attention to the life histories of the insects treated, every stage being described and discussed' (DAB). Volume I includes Edwards' Synopsis of North American Butterflies and volume II the List of Species of the Diurnal Lepidoptera of America. A third volume was published in 1897, in which in the preface Edwards acknowledges the contribution in lithographing and hand-colouring the plates made by Mary Peart, Lydia Bowen and her sister Mrs Leslie. BM(NH) II, 512; Nissen ZBI 1234.

Two volumes, quarto (289 x 220mm). Half-titles, titles, vol. II with errata leaf, and 101 (of 102) hand-coloured plates, lithographed by Mary Peart, Edward A. Ketterer and others, many coloured by Mrs Lydia Bowen or Mrs Leslie (vol. I lacking one plate, very light occasional finger-soiling, page and plate numbers added in manuscript by a modern hand). Contemporary black half morocco by G. Schmidt & Bros (bookplate), marbled boards, spines with five raised bands, the second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, the rest with repeated ornate panel design in gilt, marbled endpapers and gilt edges (extremities rubbed, most heavily affecting spines, with some loss to morocco, corners bumped, vol. II with front and rear free endpapers detached).
