Lot 2092 | Ein Paar doppelläufige Luxus-Steinschlosspistolen, Jean Lépage, Paris, um 1795
Estimate value
€ 14 000
A fine pair of double barreled flintlock pistols, Jean Lépage, Paris, circa 1795
Round barrels with fullered midribs, smooth bores in 14 mm calibre. Well-preserved, original bluing with finely engraved and gold-inlaid décor. The midribs signed "Lepage à Paris". Each of the gilt and finely chiselled barrel roots with doubly struck mark "LC" and laurel branches. Finely engraved tangs with gilt rear sights. Slightly domed lock plates with finely engraved, repeated signature. Frizzens on rollers with rain-proof, gold-lined pans. Double triggers. Walnut wood stocks with raised, carved décor, fine silver wire inlays and studded with silver nails. Butt with fine chequering. Delicately engraved furniture of blued and partly gilt steel. Original ramrods with brass sleeves and horn tips. Length of each 31 cm.
Jean Lépage (1746 - 1834) took over his uncle’s workshop in 1779 and from 1783 onwards was "Arquebusieur du Roi". He later carried the titles of "Arquebusieur du 1er Consul", "Arquebusier de L'Empereur" and later again "Arquebusierur du Roi".
The pistols at hand seem to date from the years of the revolution before the first consulate, since he signed without a title.
