Lot 276 | EINE STATUE VON BUDDHA AUS SCHIEFER
Estimate value
€ 5 000 – 10 000
India, Gandhara style Schist. H. 112 cm. This face of Buddha exudes both ancient Greek and Asian native styles and is framed with the rippling hair and ushnisha by the circular nimbus. His monastic robe wraps around his neck in thick layers, forms U-shaped folds on his legs and also reveals the body outline. The hems of the robes are gathered in a soft roll clutched by his left hand to keep the garment tort and in place, while his right forearm terminates with a mortise. The sculpture's base is carved in low relief depicting three-layers open lotus flowers on three sides. Provenance: The Buddha statue was in private collection in Japan until 1972, and was purchased by the current collector from Zenith oriental Art in the Netherlands in 2013.
