Großer, schmiedeeiserner Steigbügel in Kreuzform mit beidseitig aufwändig gearbeitetem, floralem Kerbdekor. An der Oberseite kräftige Öse. An der Fußauflage kleine, alte Fehl- und Reparaturstelle, eine Kantenverstärkung aus Messing erhalten. Höhe 47 cm.
Diese prächtig ausgeführten, aber letztendlich unpraktischen Steigbügel gehörten im 18. Jhdt. zur prunkvollen Ausstattung der mexikanischen Kavalleristen. 1778 wurden sie dort wegen der Gefahr für umstehende Personen endgültig verboten. Vergleichbare Exemplare finden sich in zahlreichen internationalen Museen, wie z.B. in der Sammlung des Metropolitan Museums of Art in New York (Inv.Nr. 37.117).

Large, wrought-iron stirrup in the shape of a cross with elaborate floral incisions on either side. Sturdy eye at top. Small, old loss and repair on the tread, one brass trim preserved. Height 47 cm.
These exquisitely crafted but ultimately impractical stirrups were part of the sumptuous equipment of Mexican cavalrymen in the 18th century. They were banned there in 1778 because of the danger they posed to bystanders. Similar pieces can be found in numerous international museums, such as the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. no. 37.117).
