First edition, bound for Queen Elizabeth I, of a work on the orders of chivalry, including the Order of the Garter, whose exclusive members rests entirely at the discretion of the monarch. The volume later graced the notable collections of bibliophiles Thomas Rawlinson and Peter Le Neve. Le Neve was a senior herald, rising to Norroy King at Arms, and the first President of the Society of Antiquaries. He signed himself Norroy on the title-page, thereby dating his ownership to not before May 1704. Adams S-352; EDIT 30210.



Octavo (146 x 94mm). With blank V8, italic types, 4 full-page woodcut coat-of-arms, printer’s device on title (lacking V7, blank except for unnecessary catchword 'Fer-', paper flaw at lower corner of N5 affecting about 4 words). Bound for Queen Elizabeth I in contemporary English gilt-tooled calf, Royal arms [Oldfield stamp 5] at centre flanked by initials E R on a semé of quatrefoils, arabesque corner tools, flat spine tooled in compartments, gilt and gauffered edges, traces of 2 pairs of fore-edge ties (discreet repair at head of spine and other extremities); modern morocco box.
