First edition of this important treatise by British naturalist John Ellis on corals and marine life off the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland including the description of octopuses sighted in 1753 near the North Pole by whalers.
4to (265 x 203mm). Engraved frontispiece depicting different groups of corals (slightly browned and stained), 42 engraved plates, some folding (one more), woodcut headpieces and initials (light scattered spots and marginal staings). Modern half calf over green paper boards, gilt title on spine.
