Work model from 1930, realised 1998. Bronze, brown patinated. H. 47,5 cm x w. 20,5 cm x d. 12 cm. Verso sign. E. Barlach, numbered copy 2/12, foundry mark H. NOACK BERLIN. A man in a long robe sits on a chest-like plinth, engrossed in reading a book that lies open on his knees. - The motif of reading monks or a reading monastery pupil has preoccupied Barlach since the early 1920s. In this work, too, there are echoes of medieval sculpture in the formal language, the calm statuary of the overall composition, which influenced Barlach's composition of the figures - Expertise: Expertise of Ernst und Hans Barlach GBR Lizenzverwaltung, Ratzeburg, 2001 - Literature: Cat. rais.: Laur 460 - German sculptor, writer and illustrator. B. studied 1888-95 at the Hamburg Kunstgewerbeschule and at the Dresden academy. He lived in Paris for two years before working as ceramicist in Hamburg, among others for the Altona manufactory Mutz. A journey to Russia became distinctive for his work. He first exhibited sculptures from Russian folk life at the Berlin secession in 1907. Subsequently he received many important public commissions. B. was very much pressurized by the Nazis, a. many of his works were seized or destroyed. Today he is appreciated as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th cent.
