A rare and charming Roman marble pyxis, 1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D.
Round box with lid made of brownish marble. The side wall decorated all around with a very finely cut and composed relief frieze of bacchanalian and pastoral scenes. On the lid an equally finely cut frieze, with a golden handle knob, which is decorated with a stylised blossom. A masterly work of antique miniature art, such as could probably be found in senatorial households! Intact. Height 4 cm. Diameter 4.3 cm.

Seltene reliefverzierte Marmor-Pyxis, römisch, 1. Jhdt. v. Chr. - 1. Jhdt. n. Chr.
Runde Dose mit Deckel aus bräunlichem Marmor. Die Seitenwandung umlaufend mit einem sehr fein geschnittenen und komponierten Fries aus bacchantischen und pastoralen Szenen dekoriert. Auf dem Deckel ein ebenso fein geschnittener Fries, mit goldenem Griffknopf, der wiederum mit einer stilisierten Blüte verziert ist. Ein meisterliches Werk antiker Kleinkunst, wie man es wohl in senatorischen Haushalten finden konnte! Intakt. Höhe 4 cm. Durchmesser 4,3 cm.
