Brass and copper, silver-plated, partially enamelled, and violet velvet. The square body embellished with openwork applications, the extended oval medallion in the centre with a half-length portrait of the Kaiser in uniform on a black cross and in a square field with enamelled blossoms, flanked by the Greek goddess Demeter. The dates of the Kaiser's birth and death engraved above and below. The inner square also serving as the lid for the box below, containing a braided lock of hair inset under glass, probably dating from Empress Elisabeth's adolescence. The shrine with a round frame at the top and sculpted crowns with supports for the violet cord. The silver plating heavily abraded here and there, two screws have been lost, the hinge of the lid somewhat bent. Dimensions 35.5 x 29 cm. In the original, custom-made, black leather storage case, lined in black silk and velvet. The lid with the gold-embossed manufacturer's mark "August Klein - Wien - 20. Graben 20" below the double-headed eagle for court purveyors. A label "Erzherzogin Marie Valerie." glued underneath. Dimensions of the case 51.5 x 33 x 6 cm.
August Klein von Ehrenwalten (1824 - 1890) was born in Nuremberg and moved to Vienna in 1847. Purveyor to the royal-imperial court for leather, wood and bronze ware, ennobled by Kaiser Franz Joseph in 1881.
An object of considerable significance, probably commissioned by the Empress' favourite daughter immediately on the death of the Kaiser in 1916.
