The second volume of Euler's trilogy on mathematical analysis, Institutiones calculi differentialis ‘sets out the first extensive research program for differential calculus and related topics’ (Calinger, Leonhard Euler: Life, Work and Legacy). ‘This is the first text-book on the differential calculus which has any claim to be regarded as complete, and it may be said that until recently many modern treatises on the subject are based on it.’ (W.
