Exceptional and splendid rarity : Medieval encyclopaedia, 15th century - Vincent of Beauvais, speculum maius, speculum historiale, Strasbourg 1474. This is the first of two volumes of the speculum historiale. Volume 1 ends with libri XVI, the legend of Barlaam and Josephat and the saga of Saint Mary of Egypt. This book is part of the most comprehensive encyclopaedia of the Middle Ages, divided into the 3 parts speculum naturale, speculum doctrinale and speculum historiale. With hand-decorated initials. Only 134 copies are known to exist in libraries worldwide. Vincent of Beauvais was a French scholar. The work was heavily restored in the 20th century, thus the pages were trimmed both at the top and at the margin, parts of the pages were added, missing headings were filled in, there is also a completely reprinted page in the book, but the new binding is heavily stained.
