Estimate value
$ 2 000 – 3 000
RUTLEDGE, Edward, Jr. (1749-1800). Autograph letter signed to Anthony Walton White, Charles Town, 19 June 1777.

Two pages, bifolium, 228 x 182mm (lower horizontal fold separated, dustsoiling to integral leaf). Docketed on verso. Encapsulated.

Expressing hope that his correspondent will soon have "fresh Laurels to decorate the Temple of Freedom." Rutledge introduces "Captain [Edmund Massingbeard] Hyrne of the First Regiment of South Carolina Forces, having obtained Permission to quit this country for the Summer Season on Account of his ill State of Health, & being desirous of seeking something of actual Service is just setting out for your Army." He describes Hyrne as a "spirited, well bred Gentleman" and is certain that White will "be pleased with him." Following his northern sojourn, Hyrne returned to the Carolinas where he served under Nathanael Greene as an aide-de-camp and was cited by the general for his good conduct at Eutaw Springs. Rutledge closes, writing "We live in this part of the world in a great Measure upon Hope, and flatter ourselves with the pleasing and daily Expectation of hearing you have gather'd fresh Laurels to decorate the Temple of Freedom. That you may share the Honours of our Victories, and enjoy the Sweets of returning Peace are the Wishes of Dr. Sir…." Provenance: Anthony Walton White – by descent to the consignor.
