A copy with wide margins on strong paper of the first edition of this historical work on the military-religious order of the Gaudenti friars or knights, founded in 1233 by the Dominican Bartolomeo da Vicenza with the aim of bringing peace and tranquility back to cities torn apart by internal discord.

2 volumes, folio (318 x 222mm). Woodcut emblems on titles, woodcut initials, headpieces and illustrations, several full-page, an engraved plate in first volume (some soiling and occasional dampstaining, few leaves detached). Contemporary decorated paper, marbled in vol. 1 and speckled in vol. 2, paper labels on spines, uncut (some chipping and light rubbing). (2)
