Lot 3 | Feine Figur des Buddha Shakyamuni aus grauem Schiefer
A FINE GREY SCHIST FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI - Ancient Gandhara Region, 2nd/ 3rd c. - Seated with legs crossed on a throne covered with a blanket, his right hand raised in the abhayamudra, the left is resting on his lap grasping a section of his garment, wearing monastic robe including dhoti and mantle covering both shoulders while falling down in pleats around his body and legs, his face displaying a serene expression with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows, raised urna at his forehead, smiling lips, elongated earlobes, his wavy hairdo combed into the the ushnisha and a head-halo behind. - From the collection Gerd-Wolfgang Essen (1930-2007), bought from Hauswedell, Hamburg, 2.12.1960, lot 1 This well-carved figure beautifully evokes the peace in which Buddha immersed himself during his meditation. The folds of the drapery realistically model the body that the torso seems imbued with breath, as if the figure will gently exhale in the next moment. The face conveys this sense of inner quietude to the viewer. The sculptor carved the hair in naturalistic locks. Few cracks, partly chipped, nose and chest partly restored
