A FINE ICON SHOWING THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD Russian, Palekh, 19th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Finely executed in great detail in vivid colours on a gold ground. The Virgin lies on a bier draped with a cloth flanked by four selected saints in bishop's attire and the mourning Apostles, on the left Saint Peter censes the bier whilst on the right Saint Paul stoops in grief. At the upper part of the composition, the figure of Christ is seen. He receives his Mother's soul which is represented as a swaddled infant. 32.6 x 27.5 cm.

Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, partielle Vergoldung. 32,6 x 27,5 cm. Im Bildvordergrund liegt die Gottesmutter ausgestreckt auf einem Totenbett. Um das Bett reihen sich die Apostel und vier ausgewählte Heilige im bischöflichen Ornat. Hinter dem Sterbelager erscheint Christus vor einer Strahlenmandorla, darüber ein Seraph. Die Seele seiner Mutter in Form eines Wickelkindes hat er bereits in Empfang genommen. Vor dem Katafalk ist der Erzengel Michael dargestellt, der dem Hebräer Epiphanius, der das Totenbett Mariens umstoßen wollte, mit dem Schwert beide Hände abschlägt.
