A RARE MOLDED SANCAI POTTERY PILGRIM'S FLASK - China, Tang dynasty - The flattened circular body resting on a spreading pedestal foot and rising to a waisted neck and oblong galleried rim, a pair of loop handles applied to the shoulders, each broad side molded with floral patterns and scrollwork, all under vibrant splashes of green, amber, and cream glazes, the base unglazed to reveal the buff body. - Important South German private collection, bought before 1995 at Christie's London A similarly designed sancai-glazed flask with a punched ground and floriform neck is in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, illustrated in Beatrice Jansen, Chinese Ceramiek, The Hague, 1976, pl. 49. Another was excavated at Ganjing, Heyang County, and is now in the Heyang County Museum, shown in Chen Anli, ed., Zhonghua guo bao: Tang sancai juan, Xi'an, 1998, pl. 49.
