The Jewish goldsmith Ludwig Ballin (LB) originally founded the company in Pforzheim with his brother and manufactured fine jewels. He had up to 100 employees in the workshop. In the Third Reich he had to sign over the company to his general manager, which was Bässler & Co. renamed. He fled to Brazil with his family. Ludwig Ballin was a founding member of the Pforzheim Rotarians. The "Ballin Haus" still exists today at Friedenstrasse 69 in Pforzheim. Gottfried Ludewich Wilm (1746-1829) founded his own goldsmith's workshop in Berlin in 1767, having previously worked as a journeyman for the Prussian court goldsmith Johann Lieberkühn. His descendants continue this tradition to this day. As the court jeweller, the House of Wilm has supplied countless crowned heads over the course of the past centuries. Customers included Frederick the Great, Napoleon I, the kings of Bulgaria and Romania, and the German imperial family. After World War II, the company headquarters were relocated from Berlin to Hamburg.
