STADEMANN, Ferdinand (1791-1873). Panorama von Athen. Munich: Franz Wild, 1841.

A rare, superb visual record of nineteenth-century Athens, a very good specimen of these spectacular panoramic plates complete with their printed overlays. This magnificent vista, showing Athens viewed from the Hill of the Nymphs, was produced following King Otho's accession to the Greek throne. Stademann had been secretary to the regency that governed Greece during Otho's minority. When joined, the panorama measures nearly six metres. Blackmer 1595; Contominas 689.

Large oblong folio (670 x 545mm). Letterpress dedication, list of subscribers and text in German and French. Title printed in blue and black with lithographic vignette, 10 tinted lithographic plates complete with their printed caption overlays, 6 numbered lithographic vignettes, printed on india by Lebaché after Lange and mounted, engraved map, all lithographs with the publisher's blindstamp (title repaired at edges and corners not touching text, repaired tear to dedication leaf, one or two minor other marginal repairs, variable spotting throughout). Modern blue morocco-backed cloth casing with label to upper cover, ties).
