A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF THE SIXTH SAKYA TRIDZIN, SAKYA PANDITA KUNGA GYALTSEN - Tibet, 16th c. - Seated in lalitasana on a lotus-base, both hands holding a stem of a lotus flowering along the upper arms supporting the sword and manuscript, wearing monastic garment, including tunic and mantle covering his left shoulder, partly finely incised with various musters, his face displaying as serene expression with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows running into the nose-bridge, urna at his forehead, smiling lips, his head topped with the specific bonnet displaying a pair of long lappets covering both ears and falling down his shoulders. The base with inscription at the reverse side. Unsealed. - Old German private collection, sold Lempertz 12.6.2009, Lot 26 and bought by the present owner This fine gilded bronze depicts Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyaltsan (1182-1251), a spiritual ancestor of the Panchen Lama lineage in the Gelug order and a great Tibetan scholar. He is one of the 'five founding fathers' of the Sakya order of Tibetan Buddhism. To the Yuan Imperial Court he became Viceroy of Tibet in 1249. Minor wear, the base with small repairs
