In dieser ausdrucksvollen Skulptur wird der historische Buddha Gautama Shakyamuni im Gestus des Drehens des Rades der Lehre (Skr. dharmacakramudra) gezeigt, anlässlich seiner ersten Lehrrede im Gazellenhain Isipatana bei Benares: Diese richtete er an seine ehemaligen fünf WeGelbgoldenossen, während der Zeit gemeinsamer Askese und Kasteiungen. Ihnen verkündete er als Ersten seine 'Lehre vom Mittleren Pfad' zwischen Ergebenheit in Lust und Genuss einerseits, und Askese und Selbstkasteiung andererseits, verbunden mit der Lehre vom 'Achtteiligen Pfad', der 'Wahrheit vom Leiden' und der 'Aufhebung des Leidens'. Archaische, ausdrucksstarke Skulptur, deren Hände überdimensioniert die Wichtigkeit ihrer symbolischen Geste zum Ausdruck bringen. Kupferlegierung mit Feuervergoldung. Der Sockel ist noch original rituell verschlossen und birgt wahrscheinlich noch ursprüngliche Weihebeigaben.
Provenienz: Aus einer bedeutenden amerikanischen Privatsammlung, erworben Nagel, 17.11.1999, Lot 2441 - Inschrift in Davanagari-Zeichen im Sockel. Der Skulptur war ursprünglich noch eine Aureole beigegeben, von deren Existenz die rückwärtige Halterung zeugt - Etwas berieben, minim. best.
