FINE BINDINGS – BIBLE, in German. Biblia, das ist Die ganze heilige Schrift, alten und neuen Testaments, nach der Übersetzung und mit den Vorreden und Randglossen D. Martin Luthers. Tübingen: Johann Georg und Christian Gottfried Cotta, 1730.

Luther’s German Bible, illustrated, in a contemporary red morocco binding with sculptural brass bosses. The New Testament translation is attributed to Dr. Johann Christian Klemmen. Darlow & Moule 4231.

Folio (429 x 264mm). Engraved titles for Old and New Testaments; engraved frontispieces for Old and New Testaments by Johann Georg Seiller and Johann Jacob Amman; one double-page plate and one double-page map of the Holy Land; and 60 numbered plates (some spotting). Contemporary red morocco over beveled wooden boards, all edges gilt, sculptural brass bosses and clasps depicting biblical figures (old reback, boards and spine worn; lacking one clasp, the other nearly detached). Provenance: Wynfield (bookplate with motto “Aut vincere aut mori”).
