Fines and Punishments in San Ginesio
Quaternus Condepnationum et Absolutionum, a record-book of punishments and remittals for the Comune of San Ginesio, in Latin, manuscript on vellum, Italy, San Ginesio, 1275.
An engaging insight into the fines and punishments handed out by the judge Gualterio da Macerata in 1275 in the Comune of San Ginesio.

Two gatherings, the first of 16 leaves: c.290 x c.187mm; the second of five leaves: c.300 x c.220mm. 21 leaves, modern foliation, text in a gothic notarial script (extremely dampstained and soiled, especially ff.11-16, text sometimes illegible or difficult to read, ff.15-16 stuck together, edges frayed and wormholed, creased). Bound in white card.

Provenance:
(1) Comune of San Ginesio, in the province of Macerata, in the Marche, on f.1: ‘Quaternus condepnationum et absolutionum. In Dei nomine Amen.
(2) Colker MS 100; acquired in 1966 from Renzo Rizzi, with his catalogue description inside the front cover.

The document is a register of the fines and punishments handed out by the judge Gaulterio da Macerata ‘super maleficiis, inquisitionibus, denunciationibus et accusationibus [...]’, but also of remittals, in the Comune of San Ginesio, under the rule of Uberto di Pietro in 1275. The fines are reported in the right margins, with the inscription ‘solvit’, and most are for insults and fighting (for example: ‘Quia invenimus Gentilem fore accusatum ab Homodeo Bartolomei Baroncelli qualiter fecit ei insultum et dixit eius verba iniuriosa filie, quod etima degratiatus ad caudam asininam ut in sua accusatione continetur [...]’).
