Lot 205 | Flämisch Mid 17th century. Saint Cecilia at the organ
Estimate value
€ 5 000 – 6 000
Inscribed "Bas" [for "Basso"] lower left (on the music book). Oil on canvas. 111 x 84 cm. Relined. Restored. Minor damage to frame (123 x 96 cm).

The painting was offered on 6 March 1906 by Rudolph Lepke, Berlin, as a work by Theodor Boeyermans (catalogue number 143 with illustration, plate II). At that time, the catalogue mentioned a signature by Boeyermans that had been added later - which has been removed in the meantime. Stylistically, the present work is reminiscent of works by Cornelis Schut (1597 Antwerp - 1655 ibid.), whose work was in turn artistically influenced by Rubens and van Dyck.
