Ikonographisch hat das Gemälde seinen Ursprung in einer Gruppe von Zeichnungen Michelangelos, die sich im Britischen Museum in London befindet. Übernommen wurde die kompositorische Vorlage später von Künstlern wie Giuseppe Cesari d' Arpino (1568-1640) und Sebastiano del Piombo, einen Stich zum gleichen Thema schuf 1593 Aegidius Sadeler II (um 1570-1629) nach einem Gemälde Giuseppe Cesaris (siehe Hollstein: Niederländische und flämische Radierungen, Kupferstiche und Holzschnitte, ca. 1450-1700, Band XXI, Nr. 46).
