Wolle und Seide, gezwirnt, naturfarben und gefärbt.Ca. 345 x 281 cm.
Eindrucksvoll präsentieren sich hier Figurenszenen einer historischen Erzählung im Hauptfeld des Bildteppichs und Gestalten der griechischen Mythologie in einer vielfigurigen Bordüre mit Verweisen auf Vergänglichkeit, Auferstehung und Ewigkeit. Im Zentrum befindet sich die Darstellung eines mit Lorbeer bekrönten Herrschers (Kaiser Konstantin?), der auf einem Thron sitzend - umgeben von Soldaten und einem Berater - eine Briefbotschaft empfängt oder übergibt. Parallel zur Briefübergabe ist im linken oberen Bildbereich, zeitlich und örtlich versetzt, eine Szene zu sehen, die vor dem Hintergrund einer imposanten Tempelarchitektur 2 Bischöfe im Gespräch mit dem Herrscher zeigt, der gleichermaßen auf die Geistlichen und auf seine Soldaten verweist. Zwischen ihnen zu Füßen befinden sich die bischöflichen Insignien. Die äußerst detailreich gestaltete Bordüre umfasst unter anderem Szenen der griechischen Mythologie, die als Analogien oder Begleitthemen zu den Schilderungen im zentralen Bildteil, aber auch als Darstellungen der 4 Elemente gelesen werden können. Im oberen Bereich sind Hera mit dem Pfau und Göttervater Zeus(?) zu sehen, die von Sonne und Mond als Elemente eines zyklischen Kosmos flankiert werden (Luft). Links werden mittels Feuer- und Tiersymbolik wie dem Drachen und dem Phönix Niedergang und Auferstehung versinnbildlicht (Feuer). Am rechten Rand wird der Harfe spielende Orpheus in einer Art Waldidylle mit zahlreichen Tieren gezeigt (Erde). Im unteren Bordürenrand ist der Raub der Europa, die von dem Stier über das Meer getragen wird, dargestellt (Wasser). Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, partiell Defekte und Reparaturen.
