Date: Early 18th c.
Technique: Knitted in polychrome wool and silk. The edges and tapestry backed with linen fabric.
Description: Framed by a narrow border, wide wooded landscape, in the background in front of hilly
landscapes, a castle ruin at a waterfall. In the centre of the picture a group of peasants
in a forest clearing playing croquet.
Measurement: 295x385cm.
Provenance:
Acquired in 1905 from the former art dealer Bernheimer Fine Old Masters, Munich. Since then in southern German family ownership.
Genre depictions in the style of 'Peasants Playing Croquet' by Thomas van Apshoven and 'Peasants Playing Ball' by David Teniers the Younger (inv. no. GK 143 in the Museum Kassel database, datenbank.museum-kassel.de/33879). The game probably developed in the course of the 16th century and is still an extremely popular lawn game today.
