After his training at the Düsseldorf School of Painting with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Andreas Achenbach and Hans Frederik Gude, Hermann Herzog, who was born in Bremen, was first drawn to the mountainous landscapes of Norway, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. From the 1860s he travelled through what is now the USA as far as California and found his motifs in the vast landscapes there. He then settled in Philadelphia, where he lived until his death and left behind an extensive body of work.
Today he is one of the representatives of the Hudson River School, the important group of American painters who were very close to the Düsseldorf School.
